Fully-Funded Commonwealth Scholarships (Masters & PhD) in UK for Developing Countries 2017 Now Open

Chevening offers a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.

Chevening Scholarships in Nigeria are for talented people who have been identified as potential future leaders, decision makers and opinion formers. It is awarded to outstanding emerging leaders to pursue a one-year Master's degree programme at any UK university.

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry to a postgraduate programme at a UK university. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK.

Eligibility: To be eligible for a Chevening Award applicants must:
·         Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country
·         Return to their country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after their award has 
      ended
·         Have an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry to a postgraduate 
      programme at a UK university. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 
      honours degree in the UK.
·         Have at least two years’ work experience (this may be up to five years for fellowship 
      programmes, please refer to your country page for further details)
·         Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an 
      unconditional offer from one of these choices by 13 July 2017
·         Meet the Chevening English language requirement by 13 July 2017

Applicants are not eligible for a Chevening Award if applicants:
·         Hold British or dual British citizenship (unless applicants are a citizen of a British 
      Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong)
·         Are an employee, a relative of an employee, or a former employee (since July 2015) of 
     Her Majesty’s Government (including British Embassies/High Commissions, the 
     Department for International Development, the Department for Business, Innovation and 
     Skills, UK Trade and Investment, the Ministry of Defence and the Home Office), the 
     British Council, a partner, a sponsoring UK university, or a staff member of the 
     Association of Commonwealth Universities
·         Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded 
     scholarship. Chevening Alumni are not eligible to apply for a further scholarship but      
      may be eligible to apply for a fellowship five years after completion of the first award.

Selection criteria:
Chevening Scholarships are for high-calibre graduates with the personal, intellectual and interpersonal qualities necessary for leadership. You will need to demonstrate that you:

·                     have the personal, intellectual and interpersonal qualities necessary for leadership in your home country
·                     are motivated to develop your career in order to establish a position of leadership in your own country within ten years of your Scholarship
·                     have a clear post-Scholarship plan, outlining your career objectives and how you plan to achieve them
·                     are committed to networking to find global solutions
·                     are committed to networking within the Chevening community, via online engagement and attending Chevening events in the UK and engaging with the alumni network in your home country
·                     are able to use your studies and experience in the UK to benefit yourself, your country and the UK
·                     are capable of successfully undertaking and completing your proposed course of study in the UK

Scholarship Benefits
A Chevening award in Nigeria includes:

·                     university tuition fees (Chevening applies a tuition fee cap of £18,000 to MBA    
programmes. Applicants will be expected to cover the remaining costs above the
£18,000 cap)
·                     a monthly stipend
·                     travel costs to and from the UK
·                     an arrival allowance
·                     homeward departure allowance
·                     the cost of one visa application
·                     a travel grant to attend Chevening events in the UK

Changes to the value of a scholarship
The value of your Scholarship will differ from the above in the following circumstances:
The embassy or high commission offers applicants a part award. This type of award will provide funding for tuition fees (no stipend or other allowance) OR stipend and allowances only (no tuition fees) only. In the case of part awards you will be expected to fund any difference.
  •  Applicants are offered an award to study an MBA. The Chevening contribution to the tuition fee is capped at £18,000. You will be expected to fund the difference. You may be required to demonstrate that you hold sufficient funding to cover the remaining tuition fee costs.
  • Applicants Award is sponsored by a partner organisation. Any awards of this type offered may vary depending on the agreement reached with the co-sponsor.
  • The FCO reserves the right to reduce a Chevening award or withdraw a Scholarship in instances where Scholars are beneficiaries of other significant awards, bursaries, prizes or earned income.
  • All universities are expected to cover at least 20% of the cost of your tuition fees. In cases where a university is unable or refuses to provide such funding, the FCO reserves the right to withdraw the placement and send you to your next preferred choice. Alternatively, you may wish to cover the 20% amount yourself in which case we can continue with the placement at that university. Where this situation arises your programme officer will discuss the options with you.
